NEW BLOOD AWARDS

BACKGROUND

“Stories make us what we are, remind us of when we’re at our worst, and celebrate our absolute human best. For me, it’s the only way to communicate.”

Comedy, Rebirth, Rags to Riches, Tragedy, The Quest, Overcoming the Monster, Voyage and Return – these seven plot archetypes can be seen at work everywhere, from global news stories to the smallest interaction (see Christopher Booker’s The Seven BasicPlots: Why We Tell Stories for a better idea of what these archetypes involve).

Rebirth, Voyage and Return..?

Karel Jaromír Erben – Kytice – Bouquet

The first ballad – Wild Flowers – is full of emotions and opens the whole world of different feelings and emotions of the human being as well as fairy tale creatures. It carries the name Bouquet and tells a story of little orphans crying for their mother . The mother hears their cries and prayers and comes back to them in the form of a little flower.

A Bouquet

Mother died and was laid in her grave,
leaving orphans without her;
every morning they came to the grave,
looking for their mother.She felt so sad for her son and daughter
her soul crept back one night
and took the form of a tiny flower
which spread across her gravesite.Now they can smell the breath of their mother,
know that her spirit is with them,
they’re glad. And that simple motherful flower
that comforts them they call thyme.Mother’s soul, thyme, from our own dear land,
our folktales are filled with you.
I plucked you from an ancient cairn –
to whom should I carry you?I will gather you into a modest bouquet
tied with a decorative bow,
travel across the broad land to display you
to family wherever you go.Maybe some mother’s daughter will find you;
your breath will be her sweet perfume.
Maybe you’ll come across somebody’s son;
his heart will incline to you!

I would like do the shoot as studio portrait portrait in combination with flowers. Because the poem is timeless I would like to choose vintage clothes which can be wearable also now a days.

I very like mood of this set of images because it looks like a fairytale editorial. maybe the flowers around are little bit messy but the models look like they are coming out of the flowers which is what I am looking for for my portrait.

I’ve got inspired this portrait for selection of the model. I like the natural beauty and the bronze makeup. I would like to use also shallow depth of field to give the dreamlike feel to my image.

I like here the choice of clothing and the position of the model against the black table in front of her.

For this project I would like to choose the model with naturally ginger hair and freckles. I was looking at different agencies and decided to work with Katie.

This is the final images which I decided to use for the submission. I use the vintage blouse to enhance the timeless feel. MUA was doing makeup in bronze palette. I didn’t want to overpower the vintage feel with makeup. I used the white flowers as a symbol of the tears of her children crying after their mother every day. I asked the model hold the flowers to make it look like she is coming through them. I use a black table in front of the models to symbolise death.

I worked with the layers in editing. After the basic edit (white balance, curves and skin retouch) I applied 3 different layers. First layer was the image of the lighting effect which I transfer to the black and white image and this is what creates the cloudy effect. This effect should help the portrait to be little bit more like fairytale portrait and help models eyes coming out from the image.

Other layers are cross processing of different colours in curves tool. I was going for warm colours in one layer and mixed them with cold colour with other layer. I am happy with the editing here and I would like to use similar technique in my major project for beauty portraits.

Class presentation

During the class presentation I had a chance to see others’ people work and I was thinking about my project. I should have to keep this more simple and easier to understand. From the brief I understand that we should produce the image together with the statement so the statement will important as well as the image. Other classmates work was making more sense and the image was easier and clear to read even without the statement. I should have to think more about how to express the “rebirth” meaning in this project instead of trying to find a story and after photograph the image according this story. I am happy with this image and about the feel of it, because after rethinking, I don’t think this was the best idea. For future I would improve this image, by making more visible that the model is reborn as a flower by placing the flower over the model or make the flower much more overpowering the portrait as I did in my other project for my graded unit.

and one more edit I did after the submission for this brief
